Shade is infrastructure

In Egypt, the hours a public space is usable is a hard number — and it decides whether ground-floor value ever materialises.
A plaza that is unusable between ten and four is not a plaza for two-thirds of the year. Yet shade is still treated as landscape decoration, budgeted last and cut first.
We size shade against usable hours, not coverage percentage: colonnades on the west, deep reveals on south elevations, tree canopy planted at a size that performs within three years rather than fifteen.
The commercial argument is straightforward. Ground-floor retail rents track footfall, footfall tracks comfort, and comfort in this climate is mostly shade and moving air.
Everything else — water, materials, seating — improves a space that is already usable. None of it rescues one that is not.
